WASHINGTON D.C. – A man was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents early Sunday morning following an "armed confrontation" near the White House. The incident occurred shortly after midnight, prompting an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
According to a statement released by Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, the incident took place near 17th and G Streets NW, just a short distance from the White House.
"Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW," Guglielmi stated.
Preliminary reports indicate that Secret Service agents were alerted to a potential threat after local police informed them of a "suicidal individual" believed to be traveling from Indiana to Washington, D.C. Agents located the individual's vehicle parked nearby, and subsequently encountered the man on foot.
"As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel," the Secret Service statement explained.
The man was transported to a local hospital, and his current condition is unknown. No Secret Service personnel were injured during the incident.
The MPD's Internal Affairs Division's Force Investigations Team is conducting an investigation into the shooting, as is standard procedure for all law enforcement-involved shootings in the District of Columbia.
It has also been confirmed that at the time of the shooting, the president was not at the white house, but was at his residence in Florida.
This incident marks the latest in a series of security-related events near the White House, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in protecting the nation's capital.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
