Hinds County Deputy Martin Shields Killed in the Line of Duty

TERRY, Miss. — The Hinds County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of Deputy Martin Shields, who was tragically killed in the line of duty Sunday night. Deputy Shields, 37, was shot while responding to a domestic call at a home on Midway Road in Terry, Mississippi.

Deputy Shields had been with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office for nine months, but had prior law enforcement experience. He is remembered by his colleagues for his dedication to his duty and his commitment to serving the community.

"Deputy Shields died a hero," said Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones. "He died while responding to a call for service to assist someone in need. He fulfilled his assignment and his God-given mission on earth." 

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. A person of interest was found dead inside the home where the domestic call originated.

Deputy Shields' death is a devastating loss for the Hinds County Sheriff's Office and the entire community. He is survived by his wife and children.

Funeral arrangements for Deputy Shields are pending and will be announced by the Hinds County Sheriff's Office once they are finalized.
