Huntsville, TX – Travis Mullis, a 38-year-old convicted murderer, was executed Tuesday evening at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville. Mullis was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of his three-month-old son, Alijah, in Galveston back in January 2008.
According to court records, Mullis had a history of mental illness and had repeatedly waived his right to appeal his death sentence. His execution was carried out despite numerous pleas for clemency from his family and supporters.
Mullis was convicted of sexually assaulting and strangling his infant son before stomping on his head, causing fatal injuries. The child’s body was later found abandoned on the side of the road. Mullis was arrested shortly after the murder and was sentenced to death in 2011 following a trial that garnered national attention.
Mullis was administered the lethal injection at approximately 7:01 PM. Prior to his execution, he expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to his son’s family.
The execution of Travis Mullis has sparked renewed debate about the death penalty in Texas. While some believe that Mullis deserved to pay the ultimate penalty for his heinous crimes, others argue that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment and that it should be abolished.
The death of Travis Mullis has undoubtedly been a difficult time for the family of Alijah. The loss of a child is a devastating event, and the circumstances surrounding Alijah’s death have made it even more painful.
Travis Mullis is the 16th inmate executed in the United States in 2024.
