Russell County Deputy Killed in Line of Duty

Russell Springs, KY – The Russell County community is in mourning following the tragic death of Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Phipps, who was fatally shot in the line of duty on Monday night. Deputy Phipps was assisting Kentucky State Police in an investigation on Bluebird Drive in Russell County, Kentucky when the incident occurred.

According to reports, Deputy Phipps was helping to apprehend a suspect who had fled on foot. During the pursuit, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in Deputy Phipps being critically wounded. Deputy Phipps was rushed to the Russell County Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect involved also died from gunshot wounds during the gunfire exchange.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston expressed his profound sorrow in a statement, saying, "We’re overwhelmed with sadness but know we are surrounded by support from our community and across the state during this difficult time."

The loss of Deputy Phipps has deeply affected the local community. Schools in Russell County were closed on Tuesday to honor his memory, and numerous tributes have poured in from across the state. Senator Mitch McConnell and other leaders have extended their condolences, highlighting the bravery and dedication of Deputy Josh Phipps.

Magistrate Larry Skaggs, a former first responder, reflected on the close-knit nature of the community, stating, "He was always willing to lend a hand if he could. It's just one of those counties where you become part of it very quickly."

As the investigation continues, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and the entire community are left to grapple with the loss of a beloved officer who dedicated his life to protecting and serving others. Deputy Josh Phipps had been with the Russell County Sheirff's Office for 3 years.
