Phoenix, AZ – In a harrowing incident, two Phoenix police officers were shot and wounded on Tuesday evening while responding to a call about a vehicle break-in near 16th Street and McDowell Road. The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m., leaving one officer in critical condition and the other officer stable, likely saved by his ballistic vest.

Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan provided details during a press conference, stating that the officers were met with gunfire after the suspect fled on foot and jumped over a fence. The suspect, who was later apprehended, is believed to have acted alone.

“This is a terrible night for the Phoenix Police Department and for those who love and care for officers and for members of our community,” Chief Sullivan said. "Our officers have been met by gunfire 11 times this year, protecting and serving this community. What happened tonight is senseless. It angers me. I hope you share my anger."

The names of the officers have not been released, but they are currently surrounded by family and loved ones at the hospital.  One Phoenix police officer is currently in ICU fighting for his life and the other is expected to recover.

Phoenix City Council member Ann O’Brien expressed her support for the officers and their families, stating, "Make no mistake, the suspects will be found and will be brought to justice. When groups and agencies continue to vilify police forces across the country, it only serves to embolden criminals."
