Veteran DC Police Detective Killed In Line of Duty

Washington, D.C. – The Metropolitan Police Department is mourning the loss of Detective Wayne David, a veteran officer who tragically died in the line of duty on Wednesday evening. Detective David, known for his dedication and service to the community, suffered a fatal gunshot would while attempting to recover a firearm from a storm drain during a violent crime suppression operation in the D.C. area.

The incident occurred in Northeast D.C., where Detective David was actively involved in efforts to reduce violent crime. According to police reports, the gunshot wound was accidental. The gun that Det. David was retrieving surprisingly went off and struck Det. David in the head.  Despite immediate medical attention, Detective David succumbed to his injuries.

Neighbors and colleagues remember the veteran detective as a committed and compassionate officer who always went the extra mile to serve his community. “Wayne was an awesome neighbor. He was always available and ready and willing to help however he could." said a local resident of Det. David's neighborhood.

The body of Detective David was transported to a funeral home in District Heights, Maryland. The Metropolitan Police Department has expressed deep condolences to Detective David’s family and friends, acknowledging his significant contributions and the profound loss felt by the entire community.
