San Diego Police Officer Killed in Pursuit Crash

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Austin Machitar, who tragically lost his life during a high-speed pursuit on the night of August 28, 2024. Officer Machitar, 30, was a dedicated member of the force, having served with distinction since joining the department in 2019.

The incident occurred near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard when Officer Machitar and his partner, Officer Zachary Martinez, 27, were in pursuit of a suspect vehicle. The suspect, who was fleeing from the police, collided with the officers’ patrol car, resulting in a devastating crash. Officer Machitar succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Officer Martinez was critically injured and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Officer Machitar was the 92nd police officer to die in the line of duty this year. 

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl expressed his condolences and highlighted Officer Machitar’s commitment to public service. “Officer Machitar was an exemplary officer who dedicated his life to protecting our community. His loss is a profound tragedy for our department and the entire city." Chief Wahl stated.

Officer Machitar is survived by his parents and sister. Funeral arrangements are being made, and the community is invited to pay their respects. A memorial service will be held to honor his life and service to the San Diego community. 

The suspect involved in the crash also died at the scene.
