Tragedy Strikes Dallas PD, Three Officers Shot, One Deceased

Dallas, TX – Tragedy struck the Dallas Police Department late Thursday night when three Dallas police officers were shot in the Oak Cliff neighborhood. One officer has tragically lost his life, while two others remain hospitalized with injuries.

The incident began around 10:10 p.m. when officers responded to an “officer in distress” call on the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive, outside the For Oak Cliff Community Center. Upon arrival, Dallas Police found one of their own shot inside a marked patrol vehicle. A suspect was identified and a gun battle transpired between responding officers and the suspect. Two additional Dallas PD officers were shot during the gun battle. The two injured officers were transported to local hospitals with one officer in critical condition and the other officer stable. 

After shooting the three officers, the suspect fled the scene leading officers on a police chase that ended in Lewisville, Texas, approximately 30 miles away from the initial crime scene. The suspect, armed with a long gun and pistol, was fatally shot by Dallas police near Interstate 35E and Business Texas 121.

The fallen officer as later identified as Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks, who is a recent police academy graduate. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has ordered flags in the city to be flown at half-staff and expressed his condolences, stating, "Dallas has lost a hero.”
